Gorilla Society: Conflict, Compromise, and Cooperation Between the Sexes

More By Alexander H. Harcourt, Kelly J. Stewart Societies develop as a result of the interactions of individuals as they compete and cooperate with one another in the evolutionary struggle to survive and reproduce successfully. Gorilla society is arranged according to these different and sometimes conflicting evolutionary goals of the sexes. In seeking to understand why gorilla society exists as it does, Alexander H. Harcourt and Kelly J. Stewart bring together extensive data on wild gorillas, collected over decades by numerous researchers working in diverse habitats across Africa, to illustrate how the social system of gorillas has evolved and endured. Gorilla Society introduces recent theories explaining primate societies, describes gorilla life history, ecology, and social systems, and explores both sexes’ evolutionary strategies of survival and reproduction. With a focus on the future, Harcourt and Stewart conclude with suggestions for future research and conservation. An exemplary work of socioecology from two of the world’s best known gorilla biologists, Gorilla Society will be a landmark study on a par with the work of George Schaller—a synthesis of existing research on these remarkable animals and the societies in which they live. (20071001) Summary: Very interesting! Rating: 5 This book is a very interesting one, the authors share with us many questions, analysis and studies about de gorillas societies. Also share some compiling others usefull infomations. They make us think. I'm glad to have adquired it to complement may studies. Thanks. Paulina Esteves, Lisboa, Portugal Summary: Good book Rating: 4 Excellent book with a sociecological point of view. As the prologue remembers, no mention to culture. Summary: Gorilla Society is wonderful Rating: 5 I cannot say enough good about this book. The subject is fascinating - gorillas are amazing animals and they share an extraordinarily close genetic relationship to us. Their society helps us understand the roots of human society. It may not be an exaggeration to say that the authors know more about their subject than anyone else on earth. They both worked closely with Dian Fossey and logged more hours with the animals than the hero of Gorillas in the Mist. Their methods of study are cutting-edge science, but the text is so well written that complicated methods and concepts are easily understood. Besides learning about gorilla society, one is treated with finding out what is new in the science of socioecology. Summary: Gorillas with panache Rating: 5 Harcourt and Stewart have written the definitive book on gorilla societal behavior. The fruit of decades of field work and exhaustive research, this book presents a picture of a threatened primate society that must be better protected from its neo-capitalist, all consuming cousins.
