editorialreviews

Japan has been a pro-active player in the process of globalization, which has had profound effects on the Asian continent, and the globalisation of Japanese production is now having reciprocal effects on the Japanese economy. However, as Japan is an affluent, industrialised liberal democracy, the experiences of Japanese women differ markedly from those of women elsewhere in Asia. The Japanese case is also significantly different from that of other first world nations. The specific economic, political, social and cultural institutions of Japan mean that it is adjusting to globalisation in a way that is nuanced by its history. In addition, such cultural phenomena as the persistence of the ideal of the three-generation family, and homosocial norms have a distinctive effect on women's reproductive and productive work, and strategies of activism.

Globalisation and Women in the Japanese Workforce contributes to the debate about the impact of globalisation upon women. It examines the impactof restructuring upon women's employment in Japan and describes the actions women are taking individually and collectively to campaign for change in their working environment and the laws and practices regulating it.
