Glenn Hughes (born in Cannock, Staffordshire, England on August 21, 1952) is a bassist and vocalist well-known as the lead vocalist for Black Sabbath during the mid 1980s, as well as playing bass and performing vocals for the Mk. III & IV line-ups of Deep Purple.

Hughes fronted Finders Keepers in the 1960s as bassist/vocalist, as well as the British funk rock band Trapeze. Hughes then went on to served as bassist/vocalist for Deep Purple between 1973 and 1976, embarking on a solo career following his departure from the group. In 1982, he joined up with ex Pat Travers guitarist Pat Thrall, to record the highly underrated and badly promoted 'Hughes/Thrall', which went virtually unnoticed at the time but is now, 25 years later, the most influential of Glenn's entire discography, often cited by many fans/musicians to be the their favorite album. In the mid-1980s, Hughes recorded several different albums with bands and artists including Phenomena,("Phenomena" Phenomena II: Dream Runner"), Gary Moore ("Run For Cover"), and Black Sabbath ("Seventh Star", though this was to have been a solo album by Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi, and only came out as a Sabbath album due to record label pressure). Beginning in the mid 80's, Glenn's health problems due to over eating/drugs/alcohol began to seriously affect his musical projects, and this contributed to very short stints with Gary Moore and Tony Iommi, as Glenn was unable to tour with them properly due to his bad health. By the end of the 1980s, Hughes' ongoing drug problem was derailing him, and it wasn't until 1991 that a clean, sober and fully rejuvenated Glenn Hughes returned with the hit "America: What Time Is Love?" with the KLF. He also recorded a melodic rock album ("Face The Truth") with former Europe guitarist, John Norum, prior to re-embarking on an international solo career that he's primarily focused on to this day. In 1999, Glenn Hughes did a 4-5 city tribute tour to Tommy Bolin in Texas, with Tommy's brother Johnny (of Black Oak Arkansas) on drums.

Hughes supported with a massive European tour for his "Soul Mover" album, as well as collaborating with Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi on the 2005 album Fused.

И пусть слышны крики фанатов, гласящих "лицензионным дискам не место в коллекции настоящего ценителя". Считайте меня ненастоящим ценителем, но скупить всё, что бы мне хотелось, в фирменном варианте, да ещё и чтобы сравнить что лучше - японский или английский вариант, я себе позволить не могу.

Вдвойне приятно, когда от продавца первым делом слышишь: "А вот вы нового Хьюза спрашивали, так их теперь есть у нас", хотя я в этом магазине во второй раз.

Тот же продавец, правда, уверял, что Хьюз теперь стал звучать почти как Red Hot Chilly Peppers: "Да Вы на музыкантов посмотрите!" Смотрим.

Dave Navarro принимал участие в записи двух песен, Chad Smith - на всех барабанил. Кивнул, хотя про себя подумал, что вряд ли барабанщик мог кардинально поменять саунд, уж скорее Гленн поменяет звучание "Перцев", если там вдруг окажется...

Первым делом замечаю наличие multimedia-дорожки. Лезу смотреть - точно! Видеоклип! Здорово! Спасибо! Включаю. Правда, потом альбом буду слушать несколько "замыленным ухом", если можно так выразиться, но зато хоть первая песня плотнее осядет.

Картинка в клипе - красивая. Гленн Хьюз и Red Hot Chilly Peppers посреди полупустынного ландшафта поют и играют "Soul Mover". Сюжет - никакой. Камера наезжает на обладателя "голоса рока" с разных сторон и иногда смотрит на него сквозь дырки старой тряпки. Дейв на крыше автомобиля рубит соляк, а потом все радостно на этой машине уезжают. Режиссёру - незачёт. Правда, как статическая картинка - очень красиво, поэтому весь буклет альбома составлен из снимков из клипа.

Теперь главное. Музыка.

Как-то так вышло, что "Songs in the Key of Rock" был первым услышанным мной сольником товарища Хьюза, и он мне не очень понравился. Как показалось, он не всегда к месту использует свой (безусловно достойный уважения) диапазон, из-за чего порой даже трудно уловить мелодию песни. То ли я всё же "врубился" в такую музыку, то ли ещё какая причина, но "Soul Mover" мне понравился гораздо больше.

1. Soul Mover - динамичная, несложная и жёстая композиция, достойная быть началом альбома и достойная того, чтобы на неё сняли клип. Цепляет.

2. She Moves Ghoslty - тоже достаточно динамична, но мне не очень нравятся у Хьюза припевы, в которых он длинно и надолго растягивает два-три слова: "She-e-e-e-e mo-o-o-o-o-oves gho-o-o-o-o-ostly..." В самом начале песни пару нот сыграл Дейв Наварро, остальное - на совести JJ Marsh'а.

3. High Road - это здорово! Рифф получился очень сочным и плотным за счёт использования гитарного эффекта fuzz, куплет - фанк, припев поётся на фоне основного риффа. Ещё раз: здорово.

4. Orion после первого же прослушивания зацепил так сильно, что я несколько недель не мог выкинуть из головы основную мелодию, и часто ловил себя на том, что напеваю её под нос. Моя любимая композиция с альбома. Простой рифф + запоминающийся бридж/припев + небольшая добавка как-то по-космически звучащего синтезатора. Красота!

5. Change Yourself - что-то среднетемпово-балладное. Фирменные растянутые гласные в куплете и припеве ("in this cra-a-a-a-azy wo-o-o-o-orld...") + пара вокальных нот повыше альбомных среднестатистических.

6. Let It Go. Динамика диска начала проседать. Реверанс в сторону Written All Over Your Face, видимо: медленный и печальный куплет сменяется взрывным припевом, но в итоге, на мой взгляд, всё сильно проигрывает упомянутой "Written..."

7. Dark Star - ещё одна развесёлая композиция, звучащая как слегка утяжелённый фанк. Припев звучит примерно так: "Da-a-a-a-ark sta-a-a-a-ar ca-a-a-a-a-alling..." Тьфу. Видимо, это модно.

8. Isolation - к концу альбома динамика проседает всё заметнее. Среднетемповая вещь, только припевом напоминающая, что она вообще-то находится на альбоме, стиль которого характеризуют как хард-рок.

9. Land of the Livin' (Wonderland). Уж не знаю, кто именно, то ли JJ, то ли Гленн, но обнаружили они "прикольный" спецэффект, который им сильно понравился, - извлекать из гитары этакие квакающе-булькающие звуки, которые на этом альбоме используются почти в каждой второй песне. Данная же композиция почему-то ничем, кроме этой квакушки, не запомнилась. Вроде, рифф на месте, но мелодия какая-то невнятная, а соло - совсем кошмарное.

10. Miss Little Insane. Ещё один маленький шедеврик. Легкий динамичный звук, приправленный щепоткой клавишных и динамичным припевом.

11. Last Mistake. Что-то блюзовое на 3/4. Да простят меня поклонники Хьюза, но из белых, поющих блюзы, я признаю только Роберта Планта и Джанис Джоплин, плюс Mistreated в исполнении г-на Ковердейла. Остальное воспринимаю не иначе, как жалкие потуги.

12. Don't Let Me Bleed. Тоже довольно лёгкая среднетемповая вещь, в которую время от времени вкрапляется что-то тяжёлое. Не лучший выбор для завершающей песни.

Резюме. В принципе, альбом произвёл хорошее впечатление, потому что я получил несколько больше, чем ожидал. Но в общем и целом Хьюз - он и в Африке Хьюз. Звучание кардинально не поменялось, более того - ровно такое же, как и на предыдущем диске, несколько хитовых вещей разбавлены кучей проходных, новых идей - нет совсем, а JJ Marsh играет всё так же невнятно (да простят меня его поклонники, но за свою музыкальную карьеру "голос рока" дал нам возможность послушать его в сопровождении гораздо лучших гитаристов).

Но несмотря на всё это, диск слушался мной несколько дней по нескольку раз подряд: всё же те самые хитовые вещи цепляют хорошо. Кому понравился "Songs in the Key of Rock", понравится и этот. Хотя, признаться, лучше б Гленн пару лет потерпел, а потом выдал бы альбом целиком из шедевров...

I am presenting you multimedia and audio data separately so you can burn it complete or you can trash the data. It is up to you. I will give you a solution how to burn CD-Extra, but it is impossible to do it in Plextools. Even for the first part you have to disable extra features, namely Gigarec. I have tried to burn with this function enabled, but the data track wasn't visible/accessible and PC had a problems identifying CD, the loading time was significantly increased. Better present the safest story.

As I told, drawback of CD-Extras is - you can't use the special abilities of Plextor drives or any others you have. I didn't figure out how to employ everything at once.

How to create CD-Extra?

I. Burn the audio, but leave CD open. NO special functions enabled (except burn-proof and Varirec)

IIa. Open the ISO in some burning program (I am using Nero). Select Mode 2 / XA, no Multisession and Strategy is Track-at-once. Doesn't work with DAO. Also finalize the disc.

IIb. Previous was valid for adding files, this ISO is already prepared, so all you have to select is TAO and Finalize.

III. Voila! You got CD-Extra. I tested it with Nero, also I know older CDR-Win would screw the CD up, so don't even try. You can test it first with some RW to see it works.

IV. Don't worry! Once you start burning CD-Extras, you'll become a pro in no time!

Even within a decade -- the '70s -- that gave listeners arguably unequaled quantities of brilliantly gifted hard rock vocalists, former Trapeze and Deep Purple legend Glenn Hughes was an instantly recognizable force due to his singular lung capacity and soulful tone. Oh yeah, and he plays bass, too, don't you know? And it may well be that second, less famous talent -- when paired up with Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer extraordinaire Chad Smith into a dynamite rhythm section -- that constitutes the real X-factor to the success of Hughes' 2005 solo project, Soul Mover. Hughes' longtime guitarist, J.J. Marsh, and top session organist Ed Roth also contribute to the album's heavy funk, and lead one to think that, were it not for Smith's business and legal responsibilities to RHCP, Soul Mover would have probably been released under a proper band moniker -- such is the crackling electricity between the four men. But in any event (and on to the music), the opening title track piles on the star power with a visiting Dave Navarro playing a pyrotechnic solo over the Stevie Ray Vaughan-reminiscent, chunky guitar wallop, and the ensuing "She Moves Ghostly" is memorable both for its nearly overpowering Latin-flavored percussion and for Hughes' multi-tracked vocals, which make it sound as if his old Deep Purple foil, David Coverdale, were also sitting in on the session. Numerous energetic fusions of funk and classic rock aesthetics follow, but the album's most memorable moments are reserved for Hughes' most personal and heartfelt songs: "Change Yourself" and "Let It Go" are both poignant, darker, and slower soul-baring essays about his "wasted years" under the cloud of substance abuse; "Isolation" contrasts dreamy jazz with a big-ass '80s-flavored "rawk" sound; and the bluesy, organ-drenched and falsetto-laden "Last Mistake" precedes the all-styles-encompassing final track, "Don't Let Me Bleed." In sum, even more so than Soul Mover's consistently interesting and strong songwriting, it's that aforementioned "band" vibe making this much more than a thrown-together star-studded solo outing: this is an album in the most satisfying sense.
