È intorno ad una straziante elegia ispirata dalla tragedia dell'11 settembre che ruota La torre di Babele, cantata per quartetto vocale conclusa da Giovanna Marini nel dicembre del 2004. Un'opera complessa e di grande intensità, in cui si alternano momenti segnati da cupe atmosfere musicali ad altri decisamente solari, di grande divertimento. Un'alternanza organizzata in un progetto drammaturgico che pare rappresentare l'angoscia e al tempo stesso il compiacimento dei nostri giorni, fra le paure scatenate dalle tragiche dinamiche dei rapporti fra popoli e culture nello scenario delle sostanziali disuguaglianze nord/sud («qui da noi abbiamo da mangiare/ ovunque va peggio») e il riconoscimento di una prosperità delle condizioni di vita e delle relazioni interindividuali come mai accaduto nella storia dell'uomo. Una delle Cantate allo stesso tempo più "impegnate" e più divertenti che bene valorizza la straordinarietà vocale del quartetto per cui Giovanna Marini scrive la propria musica.
