More This latest reappraisal of the Succession Narrative has as its point of reference the influential work of Leonhard Rost. Keys agrees with Rost that a substantial section of 2 Samuel is the work of a single author but argues, against Rost, that the unit comprises only 2 Samuel 10-20. More important, she contends that the unit was composed by the compiler of 2 Samuel and that the succession to the throne of David is not the compiler's primary concern. K. views the unit as a theological biography whose author is chiefly interested in two themes: the humanity of David, and the elaboration of punishment for his sins and crimes.
