Por el año 300 a.C. la ciudad griega de Alejandría, fundada por Alejandro Magno en la costa mediterránea de Egipto, era la urbe más grande del mundo. Tenía avenidas de 30 metros de ancho, un magnífico puerto y un gigantesco faro para anunciar a los marinos que allí se dirigían que se acercaban a su destino. Este faro fue una de las siete maravillas del mundo antiguo.

Alejandría era una ciudad cosmopolita donde convivían ciudadanos de muchas nacionalidades. Era también un gran centro económico, comercial y administrativo. Durante bastantes años fue la ciudad más importante del Mediterráneo y esto atrajo a grandes pensadores y filósofos.

Es en este contexto, entre los años 371 y 378, donde se sitúa la trama de esta novela de aventuras, escrita por Bradsaw como segundo libro de una trilogía sobre Bizancio.

Caris, una joven patricia de 17 años, es prometida en matrimonio, en contra de su voluntad, al gobernador romano de Éfeso. Aterrada al comprobar la miseria moral de su futuro marido, decide escapar y se refugia en Alejandría. Allí decide estudiar la medicina hipocrática, ilusión que a Caris, por su condición de mujer, no le será fácil cumplir. Y así, se inclina por una solución bastante arriesgada -no le queda otro remedio- pero que le permitirá ejercer libremente la medicina.

Gillian Bradsaw ha procurado reflejar en su novela los esfuerzos de una mujer por abrirse paso en un mundo diseñado para los hombres. El precio que la joven tuvo que pagar en peligros, incomprensiones e incomodidades fue alto; pero Caris, enamorada de su profesión médica, piensa que mereció la pena.
