In 1961, Gil Evans, most notable for his work in the late 1950's with Miles Davis, gathered yet another set of stellar musicians together for a project he intended to serve as a tribute to two of his favorites composers: Cecil Taylor and John Carisi.

The resulting six sides (three sides were devoted to each composer) spanned a musical range of aesthetics from the stridency of the avant garde to the subtle almost classical harmony reminiscent of Evans' earlier work on landmark albums such as Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, and Sketchs of Spain. Evans, who does not actually contribute a performance on the record, served more as a supervisor to the project, opting instead to allow Carisi and Taylor greater artistic freedom. The record ultimately is a testiment to Gil Evans' unwavering devotion and visionary desire to juxtapose divergent styles as well as a window into one of jazz's greatest orchestral minds.
