The text entitled 'AL LETTORE' is a preface intended to provide the musician (the reader) with rules for the performance of the Toccatas or rather to point out the absence of such rules. Initially written in 1615, it was revised by Girolamo Frescobaldi in 1637.

Frescobaldi's indications, written in a polished and well-mannered style, allow the musician great freedom: lie makes no prescription of tempo (battuta) and gives the interpreter much leeway in the ornementation and even in the structure of the music. Was he simply painting out the open form of his Toccatas, or was he saying that what he wanted was a naturel, spontaneous, essentiel performance of his compositions ? In other words, was it his intention for these pieces to be performed without unnecessary rules, while being based on – taking as their points of référence – the twelve Toccatas ?

Gradually I begin to make senne of this music written centuries ego and to understand its composer-improviser. Little by Little I find a means of establishing réal dialogues, between time and space, between différent cities, differentperiods, between the score and its context, between the harpsichord and the fortepiano; and also between motion and stability, between art music and nightclub music, between acoustics and technology.
