“There are several compelling reasons why this is the Schubert cycle to own. First, it's the only one to present the scores as Schubert wrote them, without the numerous corrections and improvements which were silently added after the composer's death. Second, it's incredibly well-played (and finely recorded). Third, Harnoncourt's direction is, simply, inspired. To those with ears to hear, Harnoncourt is presenting Schubert through the composer's own eyes (or as near to that ideal as we can reasonably expect to get). In many instances it's simply a practical matter of actually observing the often ignored details in Schubert's original scores (and Harnoncourt lists them in the extensive notes accompanying this set). And these are not minor matters, either. Listen, for example, to the last measure of the exposition to the first movement of the “Unfinished” – you will hear harmonies there that you have never heard before – Schubert's original harmonies.

It's often forgotten that, despite his reputation as a pioneer in the “early music” movement, Harnoncourt is himself heir to, and very much part of, the great Viennese tradition which includes Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Lanner, Strauss, Boskovsky, Stolz and – Harnoncourt! A complementary and revolutionary (for some) aspect of Harnoncourt's makeup is his commitment to presenting works of a particular composer as directly as possible, unburdened by performance traditions which have grown up around the music since its composer has left the scene. This is achieved by taking into account all the available information about the music, practical and theoretical. And using this information in a practical way absolutely doesn't lead to sterility in performance. In fact, the opposite is true, when the musician is a great musical thinker and practitioner like Harnoncourt. Harnoncourt's aim is not (and has never been) to “reconstruct” something old, but to present the music with all the information available as something new, contemporary and alive. A smart musician soon realises that not all the information needed to perform a work is contained in the score (although much of what IS in the score is also often ignored). What Harnoncourt does, very simply, is to put this truth into practice. And, in this way, we get closer to Schubert's (or Bach's, Monteverdi's or Beethoven's) language than we can in any other way. In this regard, Harnoncourt is a musician very much in the mould of Toscanini, who was perhaps the first “modern” conductor to assert the primacy of the composer and the score. Harnoncourt has gone further, and unearthed the conventions of performance, which, though they may not be indicated in the score, were nevertheless understood by musicians of every period (and written down). Last month, I heard a live performance of Beethoven's “Pastoral” Symphony, with the Wiener Philharmoniker directed by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. No-one who has directly experienced his vital and joyous musicianship would consider Harnoncourt to be other than one of the very greatest interpreters of our time.

A magnificent achievement, and worthy to be set beside Harnoncourt's exemplary Beethoven cycle with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. As good as it gets...” –
