More For the Love of Hazel: Songs for Hazel Dickens - Dayna Kurtz and Mamie Minch (EP) (2010) For the Love of Hazel – Songs for Hazel Dickens is a loving tribute to singer/songwriter Hazel Dickens inspired by her songwriting, her voice, and her groundbreaking collaborations with Alice Gerrard. Hazel is probably in many ways one of the more under-acknowledged artists of her era; we hope this EP does even a tiny part in shining a light on the artist and her work. : ~ DK/MM 1. Scars From An Old Love 2. It's Not Love (But It's Not Bad) 3. Only The Lonely 4. Mother Earth 5. You Better Let That Liar Alone 6. Go Away With Me Audio CD (April 5, 2010) Label: Kismet Records Dayna Says: Mamie and I had just met and connected on so many levels - especially musically. we were in the studio doing a few tunes together, and Mamie started playing ‘scars from an old love’, and it was just the most beautiful, sad song I’d ever heard. Basically, we just wanted to do more work together. and although Hazel didn’t perform all these songs we recorded, she was very much in our mind and her sensibility and spirit very much informed these sessions. We thought it was appropriate to dedicate the record to her. Mamie Says: Dayna and I clicked so well when we met a couple years back in Brooklyn, and just had a great time talking about and listening to music. We found that Hazel Dickens resonates with both of us, especially the duets between her and Alice Gerrard. The songs people identify with Hazel are the more stark recordings about coal mining and unions, but her songs about heartbreak are just devastating and so lovely. We wanted to sing them together, so we took a few into the studio along with some other tunes we loved, and it felt sort of magical- this 10” is the result. About Mamie Minch Singer and guitarist Mamie Minch sounds something like a (well) fleshed out 78rpm record. She is known in Brooklyn as the area's premier blueswoman, writing and interpreting antique blues songs and ballads. After a listen it will be clear- this is Miss Mamie's music. Growing up in a seafaring family along the East Coast and eventually landing in small town Delaware, she got used to travel, attachment and loss, and early on managed to alienate herself from her peers by falling in love with lots of dead guitar players. Her biggest influences when she was young and learning to play were Piedmont style guitarists like John Hurt and the Reverend Gary Davis- many nights spent rewinding and slowing down cassettes of their reissued recordings helped her develop the percussive, intricate resonator work for which she's known. She made it to New York after finishing art school and her fascination with early blues found kindred spirits in a group of 78 collectors who'd throw listening parties for their favorite "rekkids". She further developed her repertoire and songwriting style listening to Memphis Minnie, Sara Martin and Bessie Smith- their shameless sensuality and the winking, confessional nature of their songs was a musical revelation. In 2004 she and Meg Reichardt (currently of Les Chauds Lapins) co-founded The Roulette Sisters, a Brooklyn based all-woman retro quartet that performed originals and covered blues, country tunes and early girl group harmony peices by groups like the Andrews and Boswell Sisters. They released one record, Nerve Medicine, on the Soapbox Records label. Since leaving the band in 2007 she's travelled extensively as a solo artist and made music in many places- in spring of 2009 she toured all over Australia with CW Stoneking and his Primitive Horn Orchestra, rabblerousing round Europe with an anarchist Italian street band, playing guitar and listening to 78s with R. Crumb in the south of France, and playing concerts and street shows all over Brooklyn and the world. She has shared the stage with Dayna Kurtz, Jolie Holland, Bliss Blood, Norah Jones and loads of other talented friends. She self-released her first solo record, Razorburn Blues, in 2008, and is preparing to release in August 2009 a 10" EP on Kismet Records recorded with Dayna Kurtz called "For the Love of Hazel- songs for Hazel Dickens". A few more Dayna Kurtz albums with valid links are still available on Avax.
