Tough It Out was FM's one and only shot at the big leagues. Transferring over to a major record label (Epic) was a major breakthrough in fortune and should have borne fruit, but simply buying up a band and throwing their album onto an unsuspecting public is no recipe for success. Without any form of promotional campaign it's hardly surprising the whole project died without anyone noticing and no sooner had FM found themselves at Epic than they were back on the skids without a record deal at all. The band have undergone a drastic image makeover since the release of their debut. Gone are the frills and flounces and in comes the regulation denim and leather - a deliberate act in order to sell the band to the lucrative U.S. market! So it's difficult to understand why the ploy failed because Tough It Out has moments to emulate other, more successful, rock acts. Perhaps that's it - FM have no uniquely identifiable trait and so finish up sounding like everyone else. For instance, "Bad Luck" is Bon Jovi's "You Give Love A Bad Name" which is hardly surprising given both were co-written by Desmond Child.

For their second album FM recruited songwriter for hire Desmond Child to try and apply a little of his hit producing fairy dust to their material, no doubt hoping it would propel them into the big US arena rock circuit. They also employed rock diva Robin Beck to add a little female voice into the mix. Whilst it might not have worked it did result in a better record than the first album. There is still something missing though and were it not for the vocals of Steve Overland, which are far better than most, it could be any of a dozen bands from the time. 'Don't Stop', 'Bad Luck', 'Someday', and 'Burning My Heart Down' are all good catchy radio friendly rock songs that make the album worth revisiting periodically. The rest of the album is pretty ordinary including 'Can You Hear Me Calling' which put me in mind of 'Is This Love' by Whitesnake and 'Obsession'. The latter named song being ruined by a very poor lyric which just happens to include the titles of numerous other rock tracks of the time. Namely, 'Standing in the Shadows' and 'Hungry for Love' by Whitesnake. 'Cold Cold Sweat' by Thin Lizzy, 'Can't Get Enough' by Bad Company and 'Satisfaction Guaranteed' by The Firm. It's not difficult to guess what they were listening to on the tour bus !
