FM hold a very special place in the hearts of UK AOR fans. The band ably showed that Brits could turn their hand to a nimble tune every bit as well as their American counterparts and, in Steve Overland, the band had - and still have - one of the truly great voices in Rock music. Originally released in 1991, Takin' It To The Streets is a collection of tracks that had remained unreleased up until that point in time that showed the band to be in boisterous form. If you have yet to get your hands on this release, now would be the perfect time to do so!

The only surprise about FM's Takin' It To The Streets was that it was ever released at all. When comparing the album to the band's other releases there is no real deterioration in quality but, in the two years since Tough It Out, the music scene had left AOR stadium rock vainly thumbing a lift at the side of the road. The likes of Nirvana were revitalising the sound and reintroducing the power of rock music to a generation jaded by wishy-washy pop rock. It's hardly surprising that FM had to turn to the last bastion of heavy metal, Music For Nations, to get the album pressed. Lead guitarist Chris Overland has gone west to be replaced by Andy Barnett and, whether it is his introduction or a conscious effort on behalf of the whole band, their sound has become both tighter and harder to the extent that, even though keyboard player Didge Digital is still onboard, his contribution is negligible. There's an OK ballad ("Only The Strong Survive") and a passable, if pointless, cover of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". The rest is straightforward rock and roll which neither alienates nor attracts which, to some degree, is the worst of all possible worlds.
