Bill Phillips had been publishing bodybuilding magazines and marketing nutritional supplements for years when he had a weird revelation at a trade show: many of the most loyal and enthusiastic readers he had were totally out of shape. From that uncomfortable realization came his popular Physique Transformation Contest (top prize that first year: Phillips抯 own Lamborghini), now world famous, and this book.

The three-times-a-week weightlifting program in Body for Life is deceptively simple. If you抳e spent any time in the gym, you抳e already done all the exercises. But Phillips includes a couple of high-intensity sets at the end of each exercise that should compound the training effect on each muscle group. Same goes for the cardiovascular exercise he recommends: just 20 minutes, three times a week. But those 20 minutes are spent jacking the intensity up and down, accomplishing more in less time.

Phillips arranges all this into a 12-week program, along with nutritional and motivational tips. Be warned that the nutritional advice gets a little spacey. For example, he puts 揷arbohydrates?and 搗egetables?into separate categories, and recommends three daily doses of a nutritional supplement called Myoplex, which his company manufactures. (Fortunately, he gives tips on how to make each dose taste different, such as by adding drops of peppermint extract.) Despite this strangeness, Body for Life still motivates because so many others have achieved astounding results in similar 12-week windows, and the pictures and testimonials are here as evidence.

Weight Watchers Weight Loss That Lasts -fitness-

This straightforward, kindly volume provides a logical discussion of weight loss and the steps required to achieve and sustain it. Rippe (Heart Disease for Dummies), founder of the Rippe Lifestyle Institute (a nutrition, exercise and medical research organization), shares his own stories of weight gain and loss in the book's introduction, then spends the following 10 chapters breaking down what he identifies as the most popular weight-loss myths (e.g., "you can't lose weight and keep it off"; "you can lose weight with exercise alone"; "calories don't matter梐void fats or carbs to lose weight successfully"; "you can boost your metabolism by what, how, and when you eat"). Each chapter includes an explanation of a myth and the kernels of truth and valid research that led to its perpetuation. Of course, the underlying basis for the book is that the way to achieve lasting, healthy weight loss is to follow the Weight Watchers method, and Rippe includes personal triumph stories from followers of that program. That quibble aside, a list of levelheaded suggestions (such as "Identify your five temptation foods. Develop specific strategies for dealing with them in a way that will reinforce learning the skill of flexible restraint") do clear away much of the confusion surrounding weight loss.
