The principal impetus for the writing of this book is the author’s realization that financial calculations provide the key to the implementation of nondestructive testing (NDT) for improved quality in industrial output. Scientists and engineers in industry generally have not learned much finance in their formal educations and are at a loss to be able to prove financially that their proposals for new methods and equipment are justifiable. These scientists and engineers are experts in the technical methods needed to accomplish projects. This is equally true of NDT specialists and engineers in other specialties. They generally know how to improve quality but do not know how to prove that their improvements will make money for their employer. The engineers are generally at a loss when it becomes necessary to demonstrate, to their own management and to higher management such as controllers and treasurers, that their methods are justified quantitatively on the basis of making money for the company or saving money for the government office. This book is intended to show the scientists and engineers how to justify their NDT project on the basis of finance.
