More James Monaco “Film verstehen" Kultfilme gibt es viele, Kultbücher über den Film nur wenige. James Monacos "Film verstehen" ist eines davon. Seit nunmehr über 20 Jahren erlebt dieses Buch Auflage um Auflage und bildet bis heute unangefochten das Standardwerk zur Einführung in die verschiedenen künstlerischen und technischen Aspekte des Films. Das Geheimnis seines Erfolges liegt vor allem in Monacos Kunst, auch komplizierte technische wie filmsprachliche Gegenstände einfach und verständlich darzustellen, so daß auch der wissenschaftlich unbeleckte Leser sich mühelos Begriffe wie "Semiotik" oder "Mise en Scène" erschließen kann. Ausgehend von einer allgemeinen Einführung in das Wesen der Kunst zeigt Monaco die Parallelen und Abgrenzungen des Films zu anderen Künsten wie Roman, Musik, Theater etc. auf. Anschließend erhellt er in 4 Kapiteln die wesentlichen Aspekte der Filmtechnik, Filmsprache, Filmgeschichte und Filmtheorie. Unterstützend wirkt sich bei der Lektüre stets das ausgezeichnete Bildmaterial aus, das die technischen und visuellen Vorgänge beispielhaft vor Augen führt. Von unschätzbaren Wert sind zudem die Anhänge mit kurzen Erklärungen zu den verwendeten Fachbegriffen sowie eine nach den jeweiligen Kapiteln geordnete Liste weiterführender Literatur. Wer "Film verstehen" gelesen hat, wird Filme mit anderen Augen wahrnehmen und entdecken, daß ein Film mehr ist, als das oberflächliche Vorbeihuschen seiner Bilder. "
