More Ferroelectric Polymers (Plastics Engineering) by Hari Singh Nalwa (Repost) During the past decade, considerable progress has been made in the field of electronic polymers. Research activity on electroactive organic polymers has been focused mainly on three aspects: dielectric-ferroelectric, electrically conductive, and nonlinear optical properties. Pyroelectric, piezoelectric, and ferroelectric phenomena in inorganic and organic molecular materials have been studied for quite some time. In 1963, Kocharyan first reported on piezoelectricity for two organic polymers, poly(methy1 methacrylate) and poly(viny1 chloride). It was not until 1969 that Kawai first demonstrated significant enhancement in the piezoelectric properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride) by electret formation. In 1971, the ferroelectric properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride) were also reported. These discoveries eventually led to the new field of ferroelectric polymer science, and, since then, poly(vinylidene flouride) PVDF has established itself as a “ferroelectric polymer” par excellence. Subsequently, there has been tremendous growth during the past decade in exploring the material science, physics, and technology of poly(viny1idene fluoride) and other fluorocarbon polymers.
