More Eye, Brain, and Vision (Scientific American Library) by David H. Hubel (Re Upload) This work examines the mechanisms by which we perceive colour, depth and movement, and the function of the fibres connecting the two halves of the brain. The author describes how the visual circuits develop before birth and discusses the unexpected consequences of visual deprivation early in life. He describes current knowledge concerning the higher visual areas of the brain known as 18, V4 and MT. The tasks scientists face in deciphering the remaining mysteries of vision and the workings of the human brain are also explored. Hubel begins by explaining the structure and function of the retina and visual areas of the brain, then proceeds to more complex phenomena, such as how the brain and eyes together produce stereoscopic and color vision. A Nobel Prize winner who has studied vision for over 30 years, he combines expertise with lucid style and an ability to cut through details to the essential (and fascinating!) point. Unusually attractive, clear illustrations complement his discussion. This book, 22 in the "Scientific American Library" series, continues the tradition of making complex scientific topics understandable to the nonspecialist.
