La película está inspirada en un hecho real llamado El Partido de la Muerte. El 9 de agosto de 1942, el FC Start, un equipo de ex-jugadores del FC Dinamo de Kiev (en su mayor parte) se enfrentó al más potente equipo alemán, en la época que Ucrania estaba ocupada por el III Reich. Donde los jugadores, a pesar de ser advertidos de que de no perder, morirían todos, ganaron y humillaron a los alemanes para el delirio colectivo. Pocos días después las amenazas se cumplieron.
