E' una storia completamente inventata ma formata di elementi veri, storici, verificabili in ogni particolare e risalenti al periodo della seconda guerra mondiale. Si parla dell'anno 1942 e della fuga dei fuorusciti dalla Germania che si erano illusi di avere trovato un duraturo rifugio in Francia mentre invece l'invasione della Francia da parte dell'esercito tedesco li costringe a fuggire nuovamente verso la Spagna e il Portogallo, per rincorrere l'ultima speranza di trovare un imbarco su qualche nave che li portasse verso l'America, verso la salvezza. E' la storia di un amore vissuto in circostanze particolari, raccontata in una notte a Lisbona, da uno di questi fuggitivi dopo che la sua amata compagna ¨¨ morta per un male incurabile. Una morte crudele gli ha rapito la compagna ed ora la fuga, la salvezza oltre l'oceano non gli interessa pi¨´. Nel suo futuro non vede pi¨´ nulla che lo possa interessare, sente di non avere pi¨´ speranze nell'avvenire ed offre ad uno sconosciuto che ha incontrato e che si trova nelle sue stesse condizioni, il proprio passaporto, in regola per espatriare verso l' America, in cambio dell'impegno a rimanere con lui tutta la notte, ad ascoltare la sua storia.
