Smooth jazz gets a bad rap often as not being pure jazz and a corruption; rarely is anything pure, but rather an evolution, a morfing often into something new. Such is the case with this early offering by Eric Marienthal and a bevy of smooth jazz innovators. Guests include Dave Koz, Jeff Lorber, Pualinho Da Costa, Alex Acuna, Peter Sprague and David Benoit amongst other musicians. Smooth jazz at it's finest can be heard on "That's The Way" which features Maienthal and Koz both on soprano. This disc was recorded in various studios but it still has a cohesive sound to it. Other tracks that are very nice are "Ouch" that features Lorber who delivers some funky magic on synthesizers, sequencing and drum programming, "The Village" which is a dreamy romantic song featuring Marienthal on alto in a toned down mood, "Tanto Amor" which features Marienthal on soprano in a mellow groove as the vocals are delivered by Ivan Lins in a melodramatic mood and the lovely "Where Are you" that is turn-the-lights-down-low music. Marienthal is pretty much the essence of what smooth jazz is all about. This is early nineties music that is still striving today under the guise of other artists who took their cues from these pioneers in smooth jazz.
