An exploration of the history of English pronunciation, drawing on the eighteenth-century fashion for pronouncing dictionaries and the new English obsession with 'correct' pronunciation. Joan Beal looks in particular at Thomas Spence's The Grand Repository, a politically radical and hugely successful work of the time which strove to get the lower classes to speak like the upper classes. This is a fascinating and revealing work of scholarship deftly applied.
