Stephen Large considers the extent to which Hirohito was responsible for the tide of Japanese aggression which culminated in the 1941-1945 Pacific War, and examines why he has remained a contested symbol in Japanese politics since the war. Large discusses Hirohito's confrontations first with the political ambitions of the military and then with the democratizing reforms of the Occupation period. The book relates Hirohito to his political context, which both defined the limits of power and the possibilities of imperial influence in Showa Japan. checked
