& 8220;From the cover notes

From 1970 until 1980, Emerson,Lake & Palmer innovated the sound of progressive rock with ten artistically groundbreaking, as well as commercially successful, albums.

Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg Lake (vocals, bass, guitar) and Carl Palmer (drums, percussion) were a unique blend of talent: Emerson, a technical virtuoso with a gift for arranging and composing, and an incredibly energetic live performer; Lake, a lyrical songwriter with a pleasant and versatile voice to deliver his and Emerson's melodies; Palmer, a fine rock drummer and percussionist with the musicianship and savvy to handle the demands of this new and challenging music.

"I Believe In Father Christmas" puts its authors, Greg Lake and frequent ELP collaborator-lyricist Pete Sinfield, in Johnny Marks and Irving Berlin Territory. Since its release in 1975, this perennial Christmas classic has become omnipresent throughout the world on radio, during the holiday season.

To celebrate the holidays and to proudly announce the availability of ELP's classic albums, Rhino is pleased to offer this five-song extended play CD.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Say what you will about the much-bashed progressive rock group Emerson, Lake & Palmer -- they were audacious enough to try just about anything. This made it easy for Rhino Records to assemble this little collection with a holiday theme.

In 1975, during a group hiatus, Greg Lake relased his first solo single, "I Believe in Father Christmas", which opens this CD. This number has since appeared on numerous Christmas compilations and has proven to be pretty popular over the years. Although it's a bit hard to understand why, given Pete Sinfield's rather cynical lyrics ("Alleluia! Noel!/Be it heaven or hell/the Christmas we get, we deserve" -- well, happy holidays to you, too, Pete). But Greg Lake sings them with a rather nice voice and melody.

The flip side of that single was the delightful, jazzy, near-instrumental called "Humbug", which has only appeared on CD here to date. The Scrooge-esque title is not indicative of how much fun this track is.

Sandwiched in between on this CD is the newest track, Keith Emerson's solo version of "Troika", the fourth movement of Prokofiev's "Lt. Kije Suite", also available on Keith's "Christmas Album." You might wonder what Prokofiev has to do with Christmas, unless you know that Greg Lake lifted the main theme for the coda to "..Father Christmas." Keith's rendition, with modern keyboards and a drum machine, pushes him into Mannheim Steamroller territory. A little cheezy, but still kind of fun, also.

The fourth track is another version of "..Father Christmas", which originally appeared on the band's 1977 album "Works, Vol 2." Although its credited to the band, it's always sounded to me like a remix of the original Greg Lake single with the choir and orchestration removed. This more low-key mix was the first album appearance of the song, any many people enjoy it more. (Incidentally, there is a third - inferior- version which the group recorded in 1994 for its "Return of the Manticore" boxed set).

The last track, "Nutrocker", is actually the oldest track here. It was used by the band as the encore to its 1972 live album "Pictures at an Exhibition". The songwriting is credited to L.A. impresario Kim Fowley, who originally recorded it with a studio band called Bee Bumble and the Stingers in the early 60's. Since this had been a number one hit in the U.K., and given the group's propensity for revamping classical music, it's not that surprising that the group would have performed it. It's a riotous number which cops the riff from the opening theme of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite" and speeds it up a zillion times. This is the only song here where you can definitely say that Carl Palmer appears, with his trademark drum rolls. Another bit of lighhearted fun which proves that the group didn't take itself quite as seriously as the critics would have you believe.

So, there you have it, a nice little collection for the hoildays. At 17 minutes of music and change, it's a bit of a rip-off for a CD. But both fans of the band and non-fans should enjoy, because it has little of the overwhelming bombast that the group frequently indulged in. Stuff your stockings!
