A poetic lyricism is wedded to hard-edged arrangements by Long Island-born, Paris-based singer/songwriter Elliott Murphy. Although none of his songs have reached the Top 40, Murphy's influence is reflected through the music of Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, the Velvet Underground, and Talking Heads. Guests on Murphy's albums have included Shawn Colvin, Phil Collins, Billy Joel, Sonny Landreth, Bruce Springsteen, and members of the Violent Femmes, the Smithereens, Talking Heads, and the Velvet Underground. During Springsteen's 1996 European tour, Murphy was even invited on the stage in Paris to sing an acoustic duet version of his tune "Rock Ballad."

In addition to his career as a musician, Murphy has been active as a writer, penning the liner notes for the Velvet Underground's 1969 Live and the Violent Femmes' Add It Up (1981-1993). Murphy's articles have been published by Spin and Rolling Stone magazines, and have included feature stories on Tom Waits and Keith Richards. Murphy has also published a novel, Cold and Electric, and two collections of his short stories. <AMG>

Elliott Murphy’s new album although musically rich and lyrically intense has a very simple title – Elliott Murphy – and begins a new cycle in the Murphy career and legend as it was produced by none other than Elliott’s 20 year-old son Gaspard Murphy.

Once again featuring virtuoso guitarist Olivier Durand and The Normandy All Stars, the album was recorded in Le Havre, New York City, and Paris with guests Kenny Margolis on keyboards (Willy DeVille) and backing vocals by Laura Mayne (Native), Alain Chenneviere (Pow Wow) and Lisa Lowell (Bruce Springsteen).

From the catchy opening track Poison ‘n Grace with its driving hook and images of films and monumental cities you immediately begin another musical journey through Murphyland, a term that devout Elliott Murphy fans use to describe his music. Outstanding selections from the album include Rock ‘n roll ‘n rock ‘n roll a rocking anthem that will take its place among other classic Murphy songs, the moving Gone Gone Gone, the already concert favorite Rain Rain Rain, and Train Kept a Rolling, a six minute long hypnotic journey into the poetic subconscious.

Gaspard Murphy has brought an undeniable contemporary sound and presence to his father’s album and Olivier Durand’s guitar work continues to amaze. Combine that with eleven of the strongest songs Elliott has written in a decade and ELLIOTT MURPHY will surely join such classic works as Aquashow and Just A Story From America.
