More , by Jean Dieudonné” Avec le chapitre XVI commence ce que l'on s'accorde à considérer comme le coeur de l'Analyse moderne, l'Analyse sur les variétés", ou "Analyse globale", dont l'étude des aspects les plus accessibles forme l'objet du reste de ce Traité. Malheureusement, avant d'aborder les problèmes principaux de cette branche des mathématiques, il est encore nécessaire de forger les outils permettant de les attaquer. Les concepts essentiellement linéaires de l'Analyse classique dans les espaces Rn, développés aux chapitres VII à X, sont en effet inadéquats pour travailler dans les variétés différentielles ; ou plutôt, il faut commencer par les adapter au fait que l'aspect "linéaire", s'il demeure fondamental, est maintenant uniquement local ; il faut donc se garder de l'utilisation de "cartes" tant qu'on ne s'est pas assuré que les notions que l'on étudie sont intrinsèques, c'est à dire indépendantes du choix des cartes. Les chapitres XVI à XVIII sont donc consacrés à rendre "intrinsèques" les concepts classiques des chapitres VIII à X ; dérivées, dérivées partielles, équations différentielles, etc. Chemin faisant, on élargira au chapitre XVII la théorie de l'intégrale : cette dernière ne nécessite à la base qu'une structure assez pauvre, celle d'espaceiocalement compact ; lorsqu'on dispose d'une structure beaucoup plus riche comme celle de variété différentielle, on peut développer une théorie plus vaste, celle des distributions, qui complète harmonieusement l'intégration à bien des égards et joue un rôle capital dans l'Analyse contemporaine, comme on pourra le voir aux chapitres XXII et XXIII.
