When Sanfona appeared in 1981, it quickly established Egberto Gismonti as a seminal world jazz artist. Melding a deeply delved Brazilian folk sensibility—Gismonti spent a couple of years in the forests of Northern Brazil absorbing the local music—and an authentic jazz feeling, Sanfona created something perhaps never heard before: sophisticated Brazilian folk-jazz. It helped that the artist also had an extensive European classical background and played both guitar and piano with equal accomplishment.

Performing both with his four-man group Academia de Danças and on solo guitar and piano, Gismonti gives a grand tour of the glorious native dance forms that characterize the music of Northern Brazil. Something magical happens on this disc, something that many jazz artists have striven for, but few have achieved: a music emerges that is greater than the sum of its two parts.

For my money, “Maracatu” presents one of the finest world jazz performances ever. Gismonti displays a brilliant and idiosyncratic piano technique—part classical, part folk, and purely jazz—that astounds in its felicity and feeling, especially in the bridge. The whole album is imbued with a sensuality and mystery, as well as a warmth and vitality, that is seldom found in jazz performed at such a high level.
