Earth, Wind & Fire - Gratitude [1976]

Earth, Wind & Fire were led by drummer and songwriter Maurice White. Working as a collective around his central control, they released several albums of tight horn-led funk in the early 70s with limited commercial success. Their big breakthrough came in 1975 when they starred in a film alongside Harvey Keitel. That's the Way of the World was a flop at the box office, but the soundtrack, which they wrote and recorded, was a runaway success. Filled with memorable hooks, from the disco-funk of "Shining Star" and "Yearnin' Learnin'" to the ballads "Reasons" and "That's the Way of the World", it turned Earth, Wind & Fire into superstars. A live double-LP followed the same year (Gratitude), and the follow-up studio album (Spirit) in 1976 was also successful with critics and consumers alike, including another hit single in "Getaway".

The hot streak continued with 1977's All 'n All and its biggest hit, "Serpentine Fire", while Earth, Wind & Fire developed their live show to spectacular and theatrical extremes. Though their albums never hit such heights again, they continued to sell extremely well, boosted by disco classics like "Boogie Wonderland", "September" and "Let's Groove". But by 1983, sales were flagging and White disbanded the group.

A brief reunion in 1987 saw success for the comeback single ("System of Survival") and double platinum sales for the album (Touch the World). The 1990s saw more attempted comebacks with limited success, juxtaposed with lifetime awards and increased recognition for their work in the 1970's. Although not exactly the classic line-up, a version of Earth, Wind & Fire continues to tour today.

GRATITUDE, recorded during Earth, Wind & Fire's 1974-1975 American tour, is an impeccably recorded live album. Given the band's knack for improv jamming and altered songs, you can be sure you won't be hearing studio tracks with a crowd dubbed in.

From the supersonic rumblings of "Africano/Power" to the soul sing-along "Devotion" to the percussive party jam "Sun Goddess," all the signs of a classic live album are here. An almost nine-minute version of "Reasons" shows the soloing talents of the musicians. "New World Symphony" is an epic jazz number. Studio tracks recorded after the tour are also included, such as the perfect pop ditties "Sing a Song" and "Can't Hide Love." This re-release also contains a live bonus medley from a 1978 Natalie Cole TV special. With a running time of over 70 minutes, R&B lovers should give GRATITUDE for this release.
