Next, McNeese introduces Dred Scott, a slave whose owner took him to live and work in a free territory before returning to Missouri, a slave state. Dred Scott's suit for his freedom involved a series of trials and a Supreme Court decision that left him in slavery, contradicted provisions of the Missouri Compromise as well as significant legal precedents, and fueled the raging controversy over slavery in the contentious years leading up to the Civil War. The book methodically presents the main events of Scott's life and the issues raised as his case proceeded through the courts. Illustrations include period maps, prints, photos, and documents, and a visual time line, a detailed chronology, a glossary, source notes, and lists of books and Internet sites are appended.
