More The first complete English translation of Dirck Coornhert's "1630 Synod on the Freedom of Conscience", one of the most elaborate and powerful pleas for religious tolerance published in early modern Europe. A plea for the deferment of judgment in matters of conscience, "Synod on the Freedom of Conscience" was written by a Haarlem printer and engraver Dirck Coornhert, an important supporter of William of Orange. Originally published in 1582, Synod was his major defence of the freedom of conscience as a birthright of the Dutch Republic. Rejecting the Calvinist Protestant doctrine of predestination, Coornhert outlined a non-denominational church where each citizen could speak without constraint. While he was still writing the first draft of Synod, he could still assert that 'the two main religions could indeed live peacefully in one town'. However, shortly afterwards William of Orange's effort at religious peace between the Reformed Church and the Catholic Church had already come to an end. Constructed as an interfaith dialogue in nineteen chapters, this imaginary synod presents the arguments regarding the position of the main religious denominations, Catholic and Protestant, on each other, the state and the individual. Writing in the vernacular to make his work widely accessible, Coornhert offers an impassioned argument in favour of a multifaith society at a time when the nascent Dutch Republic was struggling with the Spanish advances and with internal religious turmoil.
