For years, Hitler had warned German civilians about the Slavic-Mongol subhuman hordes which he wanted to drive away from the Fatherland. German soldiers, and not just SS ones, drank deeply of this and wreaked havoc on the USSR for three years, with slave labor for both factories and the Wehrmacht, rape, pillage and more. But, that "Slavic-Mongol horde" of the Red Army started reconquering the western territories of the USSR, until hitting the borders of Germany in the fall of 1944 in East Prussia. Then, like a self-fulfilling German prophecy, fueled in part by visions of the German-desolated Motherland and in part by Soviet soldiers' 4-ounce daily vodka ration, USSR forced hit Germany like a tornado. Thorwald details the human and physical devastation, toward German civilians and troops, Soviet POWs all believed to be traitors (why else would they be captured), and occasionally POWs of other countries, juxtaposing this with occasional acts of kindness by Soviet troops, or by forced labor POWs who had developed a Stockholm Syndrome-like attachment to people such as host farm families. He also juxtaposes this with the Goetterdammerung behavior of Mazi Gauleiters and other officials in the "Thousand Year Reich's" last spasms of existence.

This book, a chronicle of the destruction wrought by the Red Army has it invaded Germany on the Eastern front in World War II, is difficult to read. It describes the routine raping and killing of women, the plunder of all that was of value and the despair of the German people. Even though I am well aware of what the German army did in the Soviet Union during the war and of the systematic killing of millions of people considered inferior, reading it did generate some sympathy for the German civilians.

It was a brutal war with no quarter asked or expected, at least on the Eastern front. It was started by the Germans and unfortunately, it ended with them receiving the same that they had been giving. Thorwald is to be commended for the quality of the writing, the action is described in vivid detail as the German army and people engage in desperate actions trying to survive.
