Claude-Achille Debussy (August 22, 1862 – March 25, 1918) was a French composer. Along with Maurice Ravel, he was one of the most prominent figures working within the field of impressionist music, though he himself intensely disliked the term when applied to his compositions. André Caplet (November 23, 1878 – April 22, 1925) was a French composer and conductor now known primarily through his orchestrations of works by Claude Debussy. Florent Schmitt (September 28, 1870 – August 17, 1958) was a French composer; he studied with Gabriel Fauré, Jules Massenet, Théodore Dubois, and Albert Lavignac and in 1900 he won the Prix de Rome.

The works of the American writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) were highly important in the literary life of turn of the century France. Baudelaire translated his tales; Mallarmé put a collection of his poems into French; and it is not unreasonable to claim that Poe's are among the few works to gain, rather than lose, in translation. Claude Debussy (1862-1918), drawn to Symbolist poetry from his early twenties onwards, was haunted by Poe at least by 1890. A project on "The Devil in the Belfry" was abandoned; and the present reconstruction of "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Juan Allende-Blin was made from incomplete sketches of which several version exist. Debussy did, however, complete the libretto; after two drafts, he condensed the action in two scenes. "The Masque of the Red Death" is one of the Poe's best-known tales. It drew a curiously haunting harp piece (1908) from André Caplet (1878-1925); we can note the eerie glissandi, tappings on the soundbox and harmonics Caplet employs while under the inspiration of Poe. The symphonic prelude by Florent Schmitt (1870-1958) on Poe's poem "The Haunting Palace" was composed between 1900 and 1904. Of the three pices on the present disc it is the most firmly in the post-lisztian tradition of the orchestral symphonic poem and the most conservative in idiom, with its mixture of tonally rootless sections and clearer melodies.
