Dawn McCoy's MySpace lists her as pop/country, but really I think she's neither and yet both. Her CD is a lesson in fun. I get so tired of having to label things and think that a lot of music just needs to be categorized as a good time rather than country, pop, rock, whatever. Why must it be classified by a name rather than just by how it makes you feel?

I propose from this day forward music be listed as boring, depressing, mellow, fun, makes my feet want to move, lovey dovey, and things like that. Forget country, forget pop, forget rock, it's all sort of melding into one sound anyway, so why not just get over it and just start enjoying the music for what it is?

Now Dawn's CD runs the whole gamut from a bubblegum country sound that just makes you want to get up and dance to very classic and slow, and yet was never boring. I like to think she recorded the music on different days and it took on the spectrum of her moods, and let me tell you it works wonderfully. I love the CD even more because she bucked the system and did what she wanted rather than folding to big music companies. Let's face it, this is what more artists need to do because eventually it's gonna be all about the bottom line and record labels may end up being the death of good music.

Dawn has a unique voice, high and bubbly at one minute and low and sultry at the next. The only word I can think of is unique. I don't think I've ever really heard anyone sing like she does. No matter how she was singing, though, I could hear her feelings, whether she was really happy and upbeat or singing her heart out about cowards and Texas and love and pain.

So if you're like me and you like your music without feeling the need to label it, you like music that is different than the norm, that's a mixture of great sound with a splash of twang and a sprinkling of 1950s beebop, music that's sweet, sad, soulful, bubbly, and loads of fun all rolled into one album and packaged in purple and pink ruffles and lace and topped with frosting, then I highly suggest you pick up this CD.
