Sanborn's previous album Change of Heart really catapulted him into a big commercially successful place. Even as a pop-jazz player Sanborn had a gritty and intelligent tone to him that set him apart from the Kenny G's of the music world and even closer contemporaries such as Grover Washington Jr. With Marcus Miller and Paulinho Da Costa on the case musically on this follow up album Sanborn really lets us have it with ten excellent instrumental tunes, luckily coming at a time when it seemed that instrumental pop-jazz needed a good reputation. This is roughly around the same time Sanborn hosted his own late night cable jazz show where he'd have everyone from Sun Ra,Bootsy Collins and Al Green sometimes even on the same show doing the unexpected. And that's part of what makes this album so special. While it's sound couldn't be anymore rooted in late 80's jazz/R&B/funk these songs all deal with different textures of rhythm,beat and style enough to keep things always interesting and always exciting. Now this album contains some hefty,funky jams such as "Slam","Tough" and "Pyramid",which is a song that integrates a sort of digitized funk beat that only seems appropriate at the dawn of the new jack swing era although it really doesn't have anything to do with hip-hop,even if it sounds like it. All the same the influence on and from it in that regard is very important musically. Other songs such as "J.T","Lesley Ann" and "So Far Away" are more rhythmically diverse midtempo songs that make very strong use of percussion and,as always include some very jazzily improvisational breaks that showcase Sanborn's and the other players top notch musicianship and way with a groove. Even though Sanborn is usually not associated with funk (he probably should be) he surrounded himself with musicians strongly associated with it throughout his career and that shows as well. "Same Girl" is a short but potent number that is the most acoustically jazzy styled tune here-a Randy Newman cover featuring a piano solo by Marcus Miller. Sanborn gets a very soulful flavor on a modernized version of The Stylistics "You Are Everything". The album ends on a very Caribbean styled groove as Da Costa really gets his chance to work out with his percussion on "Camel Island",an easy highlite from this album. David Sanborn was on a bit of a roll in the mid to late 80's and this is an album that continued that upward momentum with everything he had.
