Gilmour's second solo album, made in the mid 80s, serves as a transition bridging the most mainstream elements of Pink Floyd's final Waters albums with Gilmour's resuscitation of the name three years later in A Momentary Lapse of Reason.

The common denominator, of course, is co-producer Bob Ezrin. The sound is defined by Ezrin's familiar touch of studio bombast and radio-friendliness. Though featuring Steve Winwood on keyboards and occasional lyrics by Pete Townshend, Gilmour's familiar bluesy guitar licks and smooth vocals are generally supported by a squeaky-clean armada of studio session pros, essentially acting as surrogates for the gritty-cleanse of Rick Wright's Hammond runs and the favored drum tempos of Nick Mason (e.g., first walking along in a 4/4 plod, then upping to a slow trot in 6/8, etc.).

This is by-the-books Gilmour/80s Floyd: a dreamhaze anthem here ("Until We Sleep"), a predictable AOR ballad ("Out of the Blue") there. Roll-up-the-sleeves rock in this corner ("All Lovers Are Deranged"), folksy acoustic in that corner ("Cruise"). I have to say, though, that I actually like "Blue Light," a minor hit combining his familiar guitar echo riffing (e.g., "Another Brick in the Wall," "Run Like Hell") with Latin percussion and horn section. This song harkens to Gilmour's contemporaneous mainstream pop involvement as a session guitarist (e.g., Bryan Ferry's Bete Noire).
