With excellent singing by the main cast as well as by the entire ensemble along with superb conducting by Daniel Barenboim, this live production of WOZZECK is the one to own. Wozzeck is the same as in the live performance from the 1980s conducted by Claudio Abbado for DGG, but the rest of Barenboim's cast is different, and they're better. In addition, the sound quality of this newer recording is superior to Abbado's,and though the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Abbado delevers a great performance of the orchestral material, Barenboim comes in a close second. The recording of the voices in this newer (1990s) issue is also better focused, allowing the singing to come through more clearly, even in the loudest tutti passages. In this respect, by the way, the 1960s studio recording of Karl Bohm on DGG is actually even better. You can hear every word on that classic audio CD.

In addition, the ensemble acting and singing in this live Berlin staging is also impressive, with a stamping landler accompanied by tinny piano and a squeaky band in the tavern scene of the last act. The set is minimalist, which I usually don't like in opera, but it's not a distraction, and the production moves forward with powerful effect without the fourth wall orientation.
