More Michael Alpert, "Crypto-Judaism and the Spanish Inquisition" This text is about Spanish secret Judaism and the Inquisition, which strove to uproot the "Judaizing heresy" among baptised Jews and their descendants. Even in the 18th century, Cryptojudaism was still prevalent, but the Inquisition finally triumphed. This work describes the private lives of the crypto Jews, as revealed in their confessions, together with their fate in prison and at the "auto-da-fe" at which they abjured their Judaism and were reconciled to the Church or, if not, burnt at the stake. This book is about the descendants of the Spanish Jews who were baptized between 1391 and 1492. For centuries they secretly adhered to their ancestral faith in a Spain which was totally Catholic. The book illustrates the experiences of men and women, old and young, wealthy and poor, who were arrested, kept in communicado, interrogated and often tortured into confessing their crypto-Jewish behaviour in the Inquisition's 250-year campaign against them. The reader accompanies the victims in their solitary cells, the torture chamber and the court room, as they confess and abjure their secret Judaism and suffer penance. Using the lengthy interrogations of prisoners and their confessions, the book delves deeply into the nature of Spanish Judaism, the ceremonies, beliefs and homelife of a clandestine faith that persisted for many generations and was seen as a serious threat by the Spanish authorities, even as late as the mid-eighteenth century. or
