In the centre of part 3 of Rohmer's "4 Seasons-Cycle" stands a young man, Gaspard, who went to Dinard (a town by the sea in the Bretagne) because he hopes to meet the girl he thinks he is in love with - Lena. Shortly after his arrival he comes into contact with Margot who works as a servant at her aunt's creperie. He spends a long time with her, and discusses the way he feels about Lena but he hesitates to tell the truth about his relationship. The reason is that he isn't quite sure himself. Although he insists he loves Lena, doubts arise...

Rohmer's films reveal what it is to be alive without narrative fireworks—or rather, what it is when the fireworks of ones life are as small and simple as finding a companion for the summer holidays (Le Rayon vert, Conte d'été) or feeling desire for someone other than your chosen partner (Contes moraux). The majority of people live lives without car chases. What may seem like banality becomes, when looked at with Rohmer's compassionate yet distanced eye, a revelation, through the quotidian, of the profound. He looks inside the intimate action of movement, train rides, car journeys, walks by the sea, intimate conversations about “me”, “my thoughts,”, “my desires” and uses these things as a conduit to reach the soul. He sees through what may strike some as petty, banal, even annoying, (Delphine's endless crying in Le Rayon Vert, Gaspard with his silly song in Conte d'été) to the living person underneath, whose pain is real, and thus always worthy of pity—whose struggles, however small, are real, and thus always worthy of our attention. You never sense that he is mocking his characters, no matter how ridiculous their behavior. It is his refusal to fall into such cheap stratagems that give his films depth, and lift what may otherwise seem like the self obsessed traumas of the young and middle class into something more important.

Après la série des six « Contes moraux », variations sur un même thème et récits à la première personne, puis la série des « Comédies et proverbes », sans point de vue privilégié, ce sont les quatre saisons qui ont inspiré Éric Rohmer. Ces nouveaux contes moraux et philosophiques, diffusés sur Arte seront l'occasion de mener un travail disciplinaire ou interdisciplinaire sur le classicisme et la modernité, et sur la place de la réflexion philosophique dans le cinéma de fiction.

Éric Rohmer est un cinéaste classique par ses références constantes à Marivaux, dans de récurrents jeux de l'amour et du hasard, ou à Musset, dans les capricieux comportements de ses héros. Mais c'est peut-être surtout en référence à Balzac, son auteur de chevet ; qu'il construit cette sorte de comédie humaine où des types de personnages, incarnés par des acteurs-fétiches de Rohmer, reviennent dans des scènes de la vie parisienne ou de la vie provinciale. Classique, il l'est enfin par la qualité de ses dialogues en langage soutenu. Mais il demeure fondamentalement un cinéaste moderne, peut-être le plus moderne de la Nouvelle Vague.

Éric Rohmer s'y révèle également une sorte de moraliste, assez janséniste sous une apparence de frivolité, de légèreté, de grâce lumineuse même : il s'agit, dans ses films, de choisir entre raison et sentiments. Cela explique la portée philosophique ou même ethnologique de son œuvre : faire distinguer « transcendant » et « transcendantal » chez Kant en coupant le rôti dans une cuisine curieusement encombrée de piliers (dans Conte de printemps) ne relève ni du vaudeville, ni de la provocation, mais d'une alchimie dont seul Rohmer peut connaître les secrets d'efficacité.

Le mot « psychologie » est employé parfois dans un sens péjoratif : essayer d'expliquer un comportement. Mais moi, j'aime montrer des gens qui ont des sentiments, une vie intérieure et des raisons d'agir qu'ils exposent. Ils parlent d'eux-mêmes, ils s'analysent. Depuis les Contes moraux, cela a toujours été mon propos, en opposition à ces films où les personnages ne disent jamais rien d'eux mêmes et ne sont pas tout à fait des êtres humains. Je crois que dans la vie, les gens sont plutôt comme je les montre : ils pensent.
