Any practicing EE will tell you it's tough to find anything genuinely useful in your average engineering textbook. They lay the foundations but rarely offer much of the stuff you'd actually use for design/synthesis of real circuits and systems. Nowhere is this more true than the black art of microwave design, where most books read like theoretical tomes on Maxwell's equations. Guptas books were always different, this one in particular. For instance, he explains the details of a numerical solution technique and then provides you with curve fits of the results so you don't have to crunch through them everytime you need to know the geometry for a coplanar waveguide, or what to expect from a microstrip bend. The guy was an engineers academic. Practical realities of microwave circuits like losses and parasitics are well covered. Most welcome of all are the chapters on sensitivities and tolerancing. Both get inadequate coverage in most texts even though they are essential for turning out robust, manufacturable designs. The book makes a better reference than tutorial since there are no problems. Although pricey (like everything from artech house) Guptas classic is still something every RF and Microwave design engineer should have on his shelf. It's one of the few books you reach for everyday.
