More The purpose of this book is to present applied mathematicians, numerical analysts, engineers, physicists and computer scientists with an in-depth study of that vast body of computational techniques based on the use of recurrence relations. These methods can be traced back to the dawn of mathematics. The Babylonians used such a technique to compute the square root of a positive number, and the Greeks to approximate it. Much later, Lagrange A789) used a computational scheme based on a two-dimensional nonlinear recurrence to compute an elliptic integral.
