More Communication, Culture and Hegemony is the first English translation of this major contribution to cultural studies in media research. Building on British, French and other European traditions of cultural studies, as well as a brilliant synthesis of the rich and extensive research of Latin American scholars, Martin-Barbero offers a substantial reassessment of critical media theory. In the first part of the book Martin-Barbero reviews the evolution of such conceptions as public opinion and mass culture. He brings out the importance of the recent rediscovery of 'the people' and 'popular culture' as a cultural force and places them within a general theory of hegemony. By considering how mass media relate to the texture of everyday life, Martin-Barbero outlines a definition of the nation as a field of rich contradictions and develops the idea of 'mediations' as a basis for understanding the play between resistance and seductions in the formation of cultural identities.
