Depuis la théorie de la relativité d'Albert Einstein, nous savons que le temps est élastique, et les physiciens étudient aujourd'hui très sérieusement la possibilité de construire une machine à explorer le temps. Mais est-ce vraiment possible ? La réponse est oui, sans aucun doute, une fois résolus les quelques problèmes posés dans le continuum espace-temps... Avec beaucoup d'humour, Paul Davies explique que pour visiter le futur, il faut simplement bénéficier d'un petit coup de pouce de la gravité ou d'une navette spatiale capable de se déplacer à une vitesse proche de celle de la lumière. Quant au voyage dans le passé, le mieux est de dénicher un trou de ver (raccourci dans l'espace-temps) que l'on pourrait traverser. Attention toutefois, si vous jouez aux imprudents, vous pourriez bien vous retrouver aspiré dans un voyage à sens unique vers nulle part !Tous ces principes théoriques décrits, Davies présente ensuite en quatre étapes un processus d'assemblage d'une machine à explorer le temps fonctionnelle. Il aborde également cette question toute aussi épineuse : pourquoi, si le voyage dans le temps est effectivement possible, les touristes du futur n'affluent-ils pas chez nous ? Furieusement ingénieux, théoriquement sensé, Comment construire une machine à explorer le temps ? est un ouvrage qui présente la science créative au mieux de sa forme !
