Dans sa luxueuse résidence du New Jersey, Roberta s'ennuie de sa vie trop bourgeoise. Même Gary, son publiciste de mari, n'y peut rien. Romantique, elle rêve d'autres aventures à la lecture de petites annonces. En remarquant à plusieurs reprises celle-ci : «Recherche Susan désespérément» signée d'un certain Jim, elle décide d'en savoir plus... Allure punk, chevelure ébouriffée, Susan vit au jour le jour. Arrivant à New York pour rejoindre Jim, elle apprend la mort de Meeker et qu'elle est recherchée par la police. Jim s'en inquiète et charge Dez, un ami, de veiller sur Susan. Roberta est parvenue à trouver la trace de Susan. Elle va même jusqu'à racheter la veste dont elle vient de se défaire dans une boutique de mode. Ainsi Roberta se trouve sous la menace de Nolan, qui a «liquidé» Meeker et la prend pour Susan...

And dream she does, until the day she actually shows up at the couple's prearranged rendezvous in New York City...and after a bump on the head, a bout of amnesia turns Roberta into Susan and opens the door to intrigue, laughter and love!
