Delicate druggy slowcore folk. Debut album by Cheval Sombre. One-man band Cheval Sombre emerged in the early 2000s, writing and recording songs in an apartment studio on the Hudson River, NY. After sending initial recordings to Sonic Boom (of Spacemen 3 / Spectrum), recording sessions with Sonic took place in March 2006, in Jersey City, NJ. Further sessions followed over the next two years, both in New York and in Rugby, with guest musicians Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips. To date Cheval Sombre has released three UK-only 7 singles (included here), all of which sold out immediately and are now collectors items.

Cheval Sombre has been producing homespun psychedelic folk music since 2000; that's almost ten years now and he's put out a respectable plethora of releases. It was only when chancing upon the expertise of one Sonic Boom (of the late, great, Spacemen 3) that his luck really changed and he was introduced to a world of thrumming obscurity. The first thing I thought when I put the album on was "crikey this sounds a bit like Spiritualized, I wonder if it's connected?" and though the band isn't directly related, the Sonic Boom connection is understandable. The record is also notable for featuring Luna/Galaxie 500 man Dean Wareham on a couple of tracks which again elevates the authenticity, especially making this kind of music. Sure it might not be the most original thing you've heard but I've got a real soft spot for Sonic Boom, and a soft spot for the kind of winding folk tunes Cheval Sombre seems to have a knack for creating. The combination is just hard to resist, really.
