More Chet Atkins - East Tennessee Christmas (1983) An even dozen holiday favorites from "Mr. Guitar" himself. This is the perfect Christmas background album. Just enough vocals to make it interesting--mostly just warm interesting instrumental music in Chet Atkins' style. Track Listings 01. Jingle Bell Rock 02. White Christmas 03. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! 04. Winter Wonderland 05. Christmas Song 06. I'll Be Home for Christmas 07. East Tennessee Christmas 08. Do You Hear What I Hear? 09. Little Drummer Boy 10. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen 11. Silent Night 12. Away in a Manger D/L Link: He's been called the King of the Pickers, but even that title doesn't do justice to Chet Atkins. His distinctive finger-picked playing has served as a model for generations of guitarists, both in and out of the country realm. This Christmas collection showcases the full range of Chet's playing, from the delicate touch applied on such hymns as "Away in a Manger" to the rousing flourishes that guarantee toes will tap to tunes like the title track and "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow." Sure, you'll be able to sing along, but unlike many instrumental albums, Chet's is full enough that sitting back to listen is even more pleasurable.--David Sprague Known as "Mr. Guitar," Chet Atkins was among the most prolific and influential guitarists in music history. With a fluid jazzy style based on Merle Travis` syncopated fingerpicking, Atkins could effortlessly adapt to any genre or mood. He appeared on recordings by Elvis Presley, Kitty Wells, The Everly Brothers, Hank Williams, and the Louvin Brothers to name just a few. He also recorded dozens of solo instrumental albums, and his playing influenced Jerry Reed, Mark Knopfler, Duane Eddy, George Harrison, The Ventures, George Benson, Pat Donohue, and countless others. Atkins won nine CMA Musician of the Year awards and 13 Grammies, more than any other country artist. Chet Atkins was born in 1924 to a musical family near Luttrell, Tennessee. He made his first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry in 1946 with Red Foley, and RCA made Atkins its full-time Nashville session guitarist in 1949. Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters hired him as a regular on the Grand Ole Opry and, soon after, RCA began issuing Atkins` instrumental records. Chet Atkins played on Elvis Presley`s RCA debut "Heartbreak Hotel," and subsequently performed on "I Need Your Love Tonight," "A Big Hunk of Love," "I Got Stung" and "A Fool Such as I." Atkins` first solo hit was a beautifully fingerpicked version of "Mr. Sandman" (1955), and Atkins continued "pickin` on" the pop hits throughout his career—in 1965 he had his first Top 5 hit, "Yakety Axe," which successfully crossed over to the pop charts. With his prolific session work and record producing during the 50s and 60s, Atkins helped create the "Nashville Sound," which competed with rock and roll`s wide appeal by adding elaborate string sections and sophisticated vocal harmonies to country arrangements. Atkins also built and developed RCA`s celebrated "Studio B" on Music Row. During his time at RCA Records, Atkins signed and/or produced Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Dottie West, Waylon Jennings, Porter Wagoner, Jim Reeves, Jerry Reed, Charley Pride, and Eddy Arnold. In 1973 Chet Atkins became the youngest person ever inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1982 he signed with Columbia, releasing a string of jazzier, more experimental guitar albums. Atkins continued to be a force in country and pop music throughout the 80s and 90s, but, sadly, he died of cancer in 2001. Atkins is sorely missed for not only his musical genius, but also for his warm personality—Chet Atkins will be remembered as one of the music business` classiest acts.
