More Ceremonial Uniforms of the World By Jack Cassin-Scott, John Fabb Professional soldiers came into being from about the thirteenth century. They were highly skilled and trained in the art of war and were available for hire to anybody who could pay their price. The Swiss formed mercenary units in the fifteenth century, and these were so successful that their services were eagerly sought by rulers of various states. From that time Swiss Guards became integrated as elite units in the armies of many countries. The German Lansquenets, also mercenaries, were founded by the Emperor Maximillian and were the best troops in Europe throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. These Germans were elaborately dressed, although at that time no official uniforms had come into being. It was not until the end of the seventeenth century that uniforms were established. From these early times a ruler needed to keep about him a bodyguard of picked troops to guard his person and those of his immediate family. These bodyguards grew in number until a complete army, such as the French Imperial Guard of the First and Second Empires, came into being. The men for these corps were hand-picked, and officers were rewarded by being given commissions in the Guards so that the Guards became an elite body, with tremendous espirit du corps.
