The French cellist Gautier Capuçon and the Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero first met a few years ago under Martha Argerich's aegis at the Lugano Festival. It was musical love at first sight and they have since given a number of concerts together, but this is their first recording as a duo.

The programme is devoted to two great Russian composers of the twentieth century, Rachmaninov and Prokofiev. It comprises each composer's cello sonata – written nearly half a century apart (in 1900 and 1949) and so belonging to very different historical and aesthetic eras – and arrangements by the performers of two Rachmaninov favourites: the floating Vocalise and the Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini.

'Gabriela and I have the same instincts and passions in the way we see music,' explains Capuçon. 'It's instinctive, but also analytical.' Montero, a pianist as noted for her improvisational as interpretative talents, agrees: 'We share the same musical world – but Gautier is also full of musical surprises. Our approach is emotional, but with a brain behind it. There's a natural, organic integration. There are so many different moods in these two Russian sonatas. The Prokofiev is mysterious and ethereal, but also full of irony and dark humour. The Rachmaninov is romantic, full-bodied, stoical and noble... There are so many emotions in its four movements – every time we play it, it's like dying and being reborn. We take lots of risks when we perform together, but nothing is crazy – it's always driven by what's in the music. There's no need to talk with words, we talk through the music.'

Le goût pour la musique russe bat son plein. Retombées de l'année Chostakovitch ? Avec pour partenaire la belle Gabriela Montero sur qui Virgin semble fonder de grandes espérances, le violoncelliste Gautier Capuçon joue Rachmaninov et Prokofiev. Du premier, il donne d'abord une lecture profonde, généreuse, bien construite et bien vécue de la Sonate en sol mineur op. 19. C'est du très beau violoncelle, avec toujours cette lumière particulière que le jeune musicien sait apporter à ce qu'il interprète. Viennent ensuite deux transcriptions réalisées par les deux artistes, celle de la célèbre Vocalise ? encore un magnifique moment instrumental ? et celle de la Variation 18 de la Rhapsodie sur un thème de Paganini. La Sonate en ut majeur op. 119 de Prokofiev connaît aussi une approche très investie, puissante, brillante mais profonde de la part de Gautier Capuçon et de Gabriela Montero.
