Camel's The Single Factor is my least favorite Camel album up to 1982 and many would argue that this is also their weakest. Fresh off their release of the concept album Nude, Camel delivers a pop rock smorgasbord. There really are some woeful tracks here, but on the flip side, some pretty good ones as well. Latimer writes or co-writes everything here (not all that surprising) and The Single Factor did achieve mild success at the time of its release in the UK. As always, there is a decent amount of guitar work spread throughout the album to keep Latimer fans happy.

The album starts off pretty poorly. "No Easy Answer" and "You Are the One" are two of the album's worst tracks, playing into the early eighties pop scene. Fortunately, the album does recover with what many have pointed to as the albums highlight, "Heroes." Actually, this track and the following, "Selva," are fantastic. The second of these two is a great instrumental with classic Andrew Latimer guitar lines reminiscent of the soft, delicate style found on the early part of "Ice" from I Can See Your House From Here. This brilliant solo is accompanied by mostly ambient filler compliments of the keys to create a very mellow, serene sound. On the B side, both "Sasquatch" and "Camelogue" are noteworthy. I would like to give this album a higher rating based on the above mentioned tracks, but there is just so much junk here. I fail to see the point in either of the side ending tracks, "Lullabye" or "End Peace," and many of the other mentioned tracks are somewhat boring and forgettable. Even for the tracks that I like off of this album, I think of some of Camel's work from their earlier years and if given the choice I would rather listen to the earlier year's singles. The Single Factor is by no means a bad album, but not nearly as strong as some of their previous stuff. Not a bad pickup for a Camel fan.
