Lyrics & Music Camel - Mirage (1974)

More Camel - Mirage (1974) Genre: Progressive Rock I remember the day I bought this album,a weird guy with a red beard recommended me the record. I was suspicious. You know, just like when your mom asks you not taking bonbons from a stranger. I kept the bill, in case...and threw it away 15 minutes later. Impossible (and I'm choosing my words here) to regret buying that record. 2 numbers are getting my constant attention: The song about the Lord of the Rings (track 3) and Lady Fantasy. In the last one, I love the way they end up the song the way they open it. It's basic, but surprisingly effective (killer guitar riff...makes your eyes watery). Latimer also proves himself to be a skilled flautist. This guy is a very very very underrated musician. And you know why? In part (theory) because he has no charisma. But the good thing is that the bands with no charisma (Trace, Focus, Anglagard) is that they get down faster to business. And we like that , left? Anyway, thanks tho the red beard guy. Are you a newcomer in progressive rock? You want to chip in but don't know where to start? This is a wise and long lasting choice. This record is oldy THE soft spot in my heart. It's heartwarming, it's catchy, jazzy and don't waste one minute on filling. It fell in the cracks of obscurity, but buying it is making a long time commitment. Catchy tunes, great guitar lines, effective and tasty keyboards and a song about the Lord of The Rings, this record will blow your freakin' mind off. It did for mine, and I'm still perfectly mornal...er narmol...normal (there you go). ~ Review by Jonathan Payeur @ Camel’s second release Mirage begins to establish the classic Camel sound. Opening with the Bardens penned "Freefall"; it features some ripping guitar and keyboard work, yet somewhat marred by the uninspired vocals by Bardens. The interesting thing is that at about 3:25 into the track, you might think you were listening to the Allman Brothers. "Supertwister" offers up a hefty portion of flute, which many Camel fans often complain they don’t get enough of in the band's later years. The middle of the record is where the band seems to hit full stride and really come up with the sound that would carry them to their most acclaimed release The Snow Goose. "Nimrodel – 1. The Procession, 2. The With Rider" and "Earthrise" are the two gems here. Both tracks offer up lengthy examples of the band's melodic and lyrical playing. An obvious Tolkien influence can be found in the lyrics of "The White Rider." Bardens steps out for a lengthy keyboard solo, eventually turning it over to Latimer. The instrumental "Earthrise" has a slow building intro, and has Bardens and Latimer trading off carrying the melody and lead work throughout the track, giving both an intense workout. The disc ends with the Camel classic "Lady Fantasy." A concert staple to this day, it has served the band well, and in the various versions they usually stick close to what you hear on this disc. Mirage shows a band maturing and growing into a signature sound. You can hear the ties that Mirage shares with The Snow Goose and it seems like a logical progression. Camel has always been about melody, and you can find plenty here, as even during the longer instrumental breaks, there is always something to hang your hat on, as the guitar and keyboards are truly the bands main voice. ~ Review by Eric Porter @ Tracklisting: 1. Freefall (5:50) 2. Supertwister (3:20) 3. Nimrodel / The Procession / The White Rider (9:15) 4. Earthrise (6:39) 5. Lady Fantasy: Encounter/Smiles For You/Lady Fantasy (12:43) Total Time: 37:47 Line-Up: - Peter Bardens / keyboards - Andy Latimer / vocals, guitars, flute - Doug Ferguson / bass, vocals - Andrew Ward / drums Get it here: | | Password: & 119;& 119;& 119;& 46;& 65;& 118;& 97;& 120;& 72;& 111;& 109;& 101;& 46;& 114;& 117;
