... are the personages in this "Christmas Cantata" written in 1712 for performance at the Vatican. The notes with the CD suggest a burden of historical and political allusions in the libretto, quite interesting in their way but utterly imperceptible to modern ears. Really, the recitativos and arias of Caldara's Vaticini di Pace sound remarkably like Handel - the same broad but expressive melodies, the same robust instrumental accompaniment, the same treatment of the voice as a thing apart from the instruments, so unlike the hard-to-sing instrument-like vocal lines of JS Bach. To listeners of 1712, of course, it would have been vice-versa, Handel who sounded like Caldara, since Caldara was fifteen years older and well established. Listening to this and other CDs of Caldara demonstrates to my ears how much Handel remained an Italian Baroque composer throughout his long career in England. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody proved that wily old George Frideric smuggled a stash of Italian manuscripts to London and passed them off as his own work. Anyway, if you like Handel, you will also enjoy Caldara. Caldara and Handel shared another item, a patron in common - Francesco Ruspoli, the Prince of Cerveteri, perhaps the most lavish patron of music in late Baroque Rome. This cantata was commissioned by Ruspoli and performed in his palace; it's likely that the cantata performed for the Pope's Christmas celebration the following year was in fact this same composition. It's a joyful, blissful work, full of flowing arias that provide opportunities for great singers, such as the Roman elite supported in numbers, to show off. The four soloists of Aradia Baroque Ensemble (two sopranos, one mezzo, and one tenor) rise brilliantly to the occasion, with beautiful nuanced voices and bravura technique. The large string ensemble, led by Kevin Mallon, supports the four singers as gently yet firmly as a calm sea supports a floating gull. As a musical bonus, the Aradia instruments also perform two sinfonias (introduzioni) for oratorios composed later in Caldara's long career. The resemblance to Handel's instrumental chamber music persists, but if anything Caldara is harmonically bolder and more emotionally colored. If I may be a little bold myself, I'd say that Caldara was every bit as skillful a composer as Handel. One wonders about such questions. Be it as it may, this is a splendid CD, one you'll play often and enjoy every time.
