Admittedly, I read this book as am interested in psychotherapy. However, I would wholeheartedly recommend it to my colleagues working in the field of major mental illness, even the most hardcore biological psychiatrists! it gives a quick overview of the important theory of psychodynamic, CBT and family/systemic therapies, as well as more in-depth application of the therapeutic work. It coherently argues for psychotherapy's place in the arsenal of the modern psychiatrist, cogently challenging the accepted truth about the nature of psychosis and the meaning for the individual. Despite being written roughly 10years ago, unfortunately the NHS and the problems faced by psychiatry in the NHS and society have not dramatically changed and this book remains relevant.
